Eltroxin is a tablet containing the hydrated form of Levothyroxine sodium which is used for the treatment of hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland is dependent upon 2 active principles for its main hormone activity these are Levothyroxine (tetraiodothyronine) and Tri-iodothyronine (see Goodman and Gilman, 1985).

The sodium salt form of liothyronine, a synthetic form of the levorotatory isomer of the naturally occurring thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3). Liothyronine sodium binds to nuclear thyroid receptors which then bind to thyroid hormone response elements of target genes.Liothyronine is used to treat hypothyroidism (a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone). Liothyronine is also used to treat a goiter (an enlarged thyroid gland) and to test for hyperthyroidism (a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone).
